British Values and the 'Prevent Duty'

From 1st July 2015 the Prevent Duty became law. This is a duty on schools and registered Early Years Providers to have due regard to preventing people being drawn into terrorism.

To protect children in our care, we must be alert to any reason for concern in the child's life at home or elsewhere. This includes awareness of the expression of extremist views.

"British Values" are a set of values introduced to help keep children safe and promote their welfare - as is the duty of all providers following the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. (EYFS)

'Fundamental British Values' is not a new concept. It is securely embedded within the EYFS and day to day teachings of Personal, Social and Emotional Development & Understanding the World.

We are a setting where everyone is treated equally and has equal rights. We encourage democracy through activities and experiences that support your child's Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

Children develop self-confidence and self-awareness by making choices and decisions about what they want to explore and using the resources we offer to achieve what they have planned. 

We help to develop children's skills in turn-taking, collaborating and making decisions collectively. 

These are skills that are essential to progress in the wider community. 

rule of law

This is about helping our children to manage their feelings and behaviour. They learn to mix and share with others, to behave within age-appropriate boundaries and to deal with the consequences of their actions.

It is simply about teaching right from wrong. 

individual liberty

This is where we focus on our children's self-confidence and self-awareness as people and communities. Opportunities are provided for our children to make their own playdough, gather sticks and leaves in the woods or take the lead in their learning. 

We support them to have confidence in themselves and their abilities. We also teach our children that they have similarities and differences that connect them and distinguish them from others and we stress that this is acceptable.

Our Jigsaw extension programme

This extends Individual Liberty, encouraging children to remember and talk about special times that they have shared with friends and family. They can talk about what their families do and explore different occupations and ways of life. 

Children are encouraged to challenge negative attitudes and stereoptypes such as 'girls are not good at sports' or 'boys cannot wear pink'.

Mutual respect and tolerance

We encourage our children to be part of a community, to manage their own feelings and behaviour and form positive relationships with others. In essence: to treat others as they wish to be treated themselves.

We facilitate exploration of and engagement with their local community to show care, respect and tolerance - regardless of race, culture, gender, age etc. 

Recent examples include collecting donations for Readifood during our Harvest Festival and visiting Caversham Library. 

We are a very diverse setting and invite families to share their cultures, beliefs and traditions at Nursery. We help our children to gain knowledge and acceptance of these by including them within our planning and giving our children the opportunity to celebrate these first hand.

We strive to promote positive images through the sharing of stories, resources, activities and role-play opportunities that challenge gender, cultural and racial stereotyping. 

In Summary

At New Bridge Nursery we embed British Values as part of our everyday teaching which links directly to the Early Years Foundation Stage. We are confident that we demonstrate these values on a daily basis, building the solid foundations our children need to develop, learn and succeed.
